Description

Low Haycote is a farmhouse with an attached outbuilding, now functioning as a house. It likely dates from the early to mid 18th century and has been altered over time. The building is constructed of white-washed random rubble with quoins, featuring a stone slate roof on the main section and a corrugated sheet roof on the outbuilding. The layout is a single-depth, two-unit plan oriented on an east-west axis, facing north, with the outbuilding extending along higher ground at the west end.

The exterior consists of two storeys and has a symmetrical four-window main range. This range features a gabled porch that is offset to the left, with four 12-pane sash windows on each floor, all in vertical alignment and with exposed boxes. There is a gable chimney to the left, a ridge chimney in the centre, and another chimney at the junction to the right. The outbuilding on the right has steps leading up to a doorway that is offset left of centre, along with a small window that was formerly a two-light mullion but now lacks the mullion.

Inside the outbuilding, there is a stone fireplace against the gable wall. To the left of the fireplace, there is a built-in rectangular "bakstone" used for baking oatcakes, featuring a stone-flagged front with a small rectangular fire-box and an arched draw-hole beneath. Additionally, there is a rectangular recess in the front wall that contains a large cheese-press with a wooden frame, stone, and screw, which still appears to be in working order. The bakstone, likely dating from around 1800, is a rare survival, with the only other similar example listed being at High Barth.
