Description

GRASSINGTON B6265 SE 06 SW (south side) 5/9 Milestone at SE 0156 6320 II Milestone. 1787. By William Tomlin for the Turnpike Trust. Sandstone. Approximately 60 centimetres high, buried in a hedge bank, triangular in section, the left face inscribed " P ", the right face inscribed ? 10 M " G ". The top and front edge badly damaged. An Act of Parliament for - M construction of a turnpike road between Wetherby and Grassington was passed in 1758. An amendment after 1779 separated the Pateley Bridge to Grassington section, the two towns being the principal markets for the lead miners of the Grassington - Greenhow area. Expenses accounts of the trustees record that in January 1787 they paid William Tomlin £3-9-0 for cutting, dressing, lettering and setting 10 milestones from Pateley Bridge to Grassington. A.
