Description
This is a milestone located on the south side of the B6265 in Grassington, dating from 1787. It was created by William Tomlin for the Turnpike Trust and is made of sandstone. The milestone stands approximately 60 centimetres high and is set into a hedge bank, featuring a triangular shape. The left face is inscribed with "P", while the right face bears the inscription "? 10 M " G". The top and front edge of the milestone are badly damaged. An Act of Parliament was passed in 1758 for the construction of a turnpike road between Wetherby and Grassington, and an amendment after 1779 separated the section from Pateley Bridge to Grassington, which were key markets for lead miners in the Grassington and Greenhow area. Historical records show that in January 1787, the trustees paid William Tomlin £3-9-0 for cutting, dressing, lettering, and setting ten milestones along the route from Pateley Bridge to Grassington.
