Description

St Helen's Well is located to the south of St Helen's Almshouses in Great Asby. The well is situated within a low rectangular enclosure, which likely underwent alterations in the late 19th century. Early 19th century accounts mention stone benches that lined the walls, but these are no longer present. From the roadway, steps lead down to a wrought-iron gate in the center of the north wall, which is flanked by walls that extend to the east and west. The structure is built of slobbered rubble with sandstone coping, topped by weathered limestone flags. Inside, a narrow path runs alongside the wall. Water rises from a large rectangular opening and flows into the beck over the steps at the front, with a small secondary outflow located under the east wall.
