Description
St Ethelburga's Well and Wall is a well-house and shelter built in 1898, with a possibly slightly earlier base. It is located over a spring that is said to have supplied Lyminge with water from Roman times until 1905. The structure is rectangular and two-storey, with its west side built against a steep slope. The building is made of red brick, which is slightly more textured on the lower half. There is a round-headed archway with an impost-level plat band on the north side, providing access to the spring at the base of the well-house. At road level, there is a timber-framed shelter with a gabled plain tile roof that houses an iron pump, which was installed to raise water from the spring to the road. A wrought iron gate leads to the road. Inside, there is a tie-beam dated 1898. Additionally, there is a ragstone retaining wall that rises about one metre above road level, extending approximately 39 metres to the north and 26 metres to the south.
