Description
Lyminge War Memorial is situated in the churchyard to the south-west of the Church of St Mary and St Ethelburga, which is a Grade I listed building.
The memorial features a roughly-hewn Cornish granite cross pattée that stands on a tapering square chamfered plinth, which is elevated by three octagonal granite steps. The lettering on the memorial is incised and painted black.
The dedication on the plinth states: "TO THE GLORIOUS AND HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF LYMINGE WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR. 1914-1918. 'GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS.'"
An inscription commemorating those who fell in the Second World War is located underneath, on the third step of the base: "ALSO OF THOSE WHO FELL IN THE WORLD WAR 1939-1945."
The other three faces of the plinth are inscribed with the names of the First World War casualties, while the names of those who served during the Second World War were added on the steps.
