Description
Holy Well is a well and housing structure with medieval origins, located on Wembdon Hill. A stone plaque on the north gable is inscribed: "HOLY WELL, RESTORED BY JOHN B HAMNELL 1857." The housing is made of red sandstone rubble and is open to the south gable. It features a tile roof adorned with fish-tail bands and a large cruciform stone finial on the north gable. The excavated floor level is accessed by a rubble step, and the floor is laid with quarry tiles. At the center is a circular well lined with rubble, which has a false bottom made of a stone slab pierced with small holes to allow water to flow through. There is a 20th-century metal cover over the well, and a semi-circular rubble bench with a quarry-tiled capping is located on the north side. The well is situated over a spring.
