Description
The Church of St Peter is a parish church rebuilt in 1866 in the Gothic Revival style by the architect Hay. It is constructed from coursed sandstone blocks and features stepped buttressing. The roofs are made of graduated slate, with the chancel being lower than the nave, and have stone copings and kneelers. At the west end, a bellcote is supported on a pointed arch between the buttresses. The church has an aisled nave and chancel. The three-bay nave includes a south aisle with three-light trefoil-headed windows, while the other side and west window contain two trefoil-headed lights with a quatrefoil in between, all under pointed containing arches. The east window features three trefoil-headed lights with a large multi-foil above.
There is a gabled south porch with large foliate capitals on the outer door jambs, and the architects' names are inscribed on the soffit of the pointed entrance arch. Inside, the organ is located at the west end. Cylindrical piers with foliate capitals support the south arcade, which consists of pointed arches with a single chamfer made from polychrome stone. Large demi-angel corbels support a similarly moulded chancel arch, while angel musician corbels support the nave roof. On the south side of the chancel, a two-seater sedilia is combined with a piscina, featuring three pointed arches with inner trefoil heads and portrait bust labels. A polygonal stone pulpit on the north side of the nave has sculpted panels, and an octagonal font in the south aisle is similar in style.
