Description

The Wishing Well, located in the corner of the enclosure to the former Hollinshead Hall, is a building likely dating from the 18th century. It is constructed of sandstone rubble with dressings and features a stone slate roof. The single cell is built into a slope and has an open forecourt that is protected by high walls. These walls include stone side benches and inward-facing chamfered piers with ball finials at the outer ends.

The symmetrical gabled facade of the wellhouse has a chamfered doorway with a heavy board door, flanked by single-light chamfered unglazed windows fitted with spear-headed iron bars. In the gable, there is a large oval opening, which matches another opening that is the only one in the rear wall.

Inside, the wellhouse features a vaulted roof with a pendent bell in the center, stone side benches, and a diamond-paved floor with a central gutter that drains from the well located at the center of the rear wall. This area contains a small sunken stone tank with a reredos of Ionic colonnettes framing an alcove that has a crudely carved lion's head and paws, above which is a moulded rectangular surround that once held a plaque (now missing). Each side of this structure has a rectangular recess enclosing a rectangular pool, both linked to the central pool, and there are small rectangular recesses in the side walls near these pools.

Historically, this well was described by Abram in 1877 as "an antique well, enclosing a spring of water of curative properties to which, of yore, the name of 'Holy Well' was given."
