Description

Darwen Jubilee Tower is an observation tower built in 1897, designed in a late medieval style. The tower is constructed from rock-faced sandstone and stands 86 feet high with an octagonal shape. It features a spiral staircase leading to observation decks and is surrounded at the base by a buttressed open arcade that supports a low-level deck. Each arch at the base has a stone shield, with a band above and a ramped parapet leading to the deck. The tower includes a Tudor-arched doorway on the west side, lancet stairlights, a bracketed cornice, and an embattled parapet adorned with cross-shaped arrowslits at the corners. At the top, the tower is capped with a lantern featuring a domed cap and weathervane. This tower was constructed following a lengthy legal dispute that resulted in Darwen Moor becoming public property.
