Description

The Lightbown Drinking Fountain, built in 1907, is located in Sunnyhurst Wood and is constructed of sandstone. It was restored in 1982.

The fountain features a circular base with four steps. The deep cylindrical basin appears to be a replacement and is surrounded by a circular arrangement of low stone seating on three sides. A tall, tapering obelisk rises above the basin, with the lower part incorporating the fountain head in the form of a Turkish-arched recess. Above this recess is an inscription set within a similar arched-headed panel that reads: "The Gift of Mrs Timothy Lightbown 1907," accompanied by a carved depiction of a heraldic beast above. The tapered head of the obelisk has been truncated and is topped with a replacement ornate stone finial. Additionally, a metal plaque affixed to the second stage of the obelisk notes the fountain's restoration in 1982.
