Description
The Potter Gateway to Sunnyhurst Wood is a lychgate built in 1904, made of dressed sandstone, timber, and tile. This octagonal structure serves as the main entrance to Sunnyhurst Wood. It features a tooled stone base with moulded ashlar coping, set with eight stone bases and opposing out-turned entrances, although the gates have been removed. The timber superstructure consists of eight stout Tuscan columns that rise from the stone bases, supporting bracketed eaves that hold up a pyramidal roof. This roof is covered with tiles and topped with a carved stone finial. Inside, the structure is paved, and a stone inscribed in contemporary script commemorates the gifting of the gate and lists the names of its benefactors. Additionally, there is a metal fixing for a lantern attached to the underside of the dome.
