Description

Stocks located in West Burton, dating from the 17th or 18th century, were restored in 1977. They are made of sandstone ashlar and oak. The structure features stone round-headed end posts that are approximately 500mm high, with vertical grooves on the inner sides. There are two horizontal boards, added in 1977, which include two leg-holes; the upper board is moveable and secured with a hasp and padlock. A small plaque on the upper board notes that new wood was supplied during the repairs to commemorate the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977. The positioning of the stocks next to the market cross allowed a person in the stocks to sit on the lowest step of the cross.
