Description

The obelisk in West Burton, built in 1820 and restored in 1889, serves as a market cross. It features an octagonal plan constructed from coursed rubble, stone slabs, and ashlar. The base consists of five steps with coursed rubble risers and slab treads. The obelisk itself is made of coursed rubble and has an ashlar band approximately two-thirds of the way up, which includes a Maltese cross incised on each side. The words "ERECTED" and "1820" are inscribed on two sides facing south-west, while "REST," "ORED," and "1889" are on three sides facing north. The top quarter is made of solid ashlar and includes a ball finial and weather-vane, which were replaced in 1889; the original top is now part of The Barn.
