Description

1 and 2 Black Bull Cottages, formerly known as Black Bull House, is an inn and stables that has been converted into a house and cottage. It dates from the early 18th century and has undergone later alterations. The building is constructed of rubble with a stone slate roof and stands two storeys high, featuring a two-bay main section with five first-floor windows.

On the left side, there is a two-storey lean-to addition, and a rear outshut to the house on the right. The main house, which was formerly the inn, has a cellar beneath the right end. It displays quoins and a central boarded door set in an ashlar surround with rounded inner corners on the lintel. To the left of the door, there is a five-step mounting block, and to the right, a cheese press weight.

The first and second bays on each floor have paired side-sliding sash windows with slab lintels and sills. In the third bay on the first floor, there is a 6-pane window in an ashlar surround, while the fourth bay features another side-sliding sash window with a slab lintel and sill. The fifth bay on each floor has a 9-pane window in an ashlar surround, positioned at the corner of the building.

The cottage, which was originally the stables, is located on the left and has paired side-sliding sash windows with slab lintels and sills, along with an end stack to the left. The ends of the range are adorned with shaped kneelers and ashlar coping. The lean-to on the left has side-sliding sash windows on each floor, each with a slab lintel and sill. The right return features 9-pane windows in ashlar surrounds, two of which align with the fifth bay of the front elevation. The inn was closed in 1937.
