Description
The village stocks, located in the churchyard 23 metres west of the tower in Great Amwell, are likely from the 17th or 18th century and made of oak. They consist of two tall rectangular end posts, each about 1.5 metres high, capped in lead with tapering oak supports bolted to the front and rear narrow faces. Each post features a central rectangular slot from ground level, half a metre high, designed to hold two horizontal oak timbers with semi-circular notches on opposing edges to secure the legs. The upper timber is broken into two pieces, while the lower one is decayed but complete. The stocks were recorded as being replaced in their original position by R W Mylne during Queen Victoria's Jubilee in 1887 and were moved to the churchyard from behind the George IV Public House in the 1920s. They are part of a picturesque group within the churchyard.
