Description
The Old School House is a former village school and master's house, now connected as a private residence. The foundation stone dates from 1857, but the current buildings likely date to around 1875. Constructed of red brick with red tile roofs and some tile hanging, the structure features a high single-storey schoolroom oriented east-west, with two lower wings on the north side. The roof extends over an enclosed porch on the west side of the northwest wing.
The building is notable for its very tall chimneys, which have a complex plan and rise to multi-stepped corbelled tops. Two chimneys at the northwest are connected by a small roof at half-height, from which a bell is suspended. The large wooden mullioned and transomed windows are present in the gables and extend above the eaves on the north side, where the roof has a flatter pitch. Some gables are half-hipped. To the east, there is a one and a half storey house that uses the same materials and detailing, featuring a wooden oriel in the north gable. The school has a low plinth and a moulded band below the windows, making it a picturesque building that overlooks the churchyard.
