Description

Two attached houses, dating from the mid-19th century and originally built as a single residence by the architect and antiquary Robert William Mylne. The houses are constructed of red brick, with yellow brick at the rear. The front of the south part (Home Lodge) is stuccoed and lined to resemble ashlar, with a moulded string course. Home Lodge has a steep gabled roof of old red tiles, as does the north crosswing of the north part (Walton Lodge), while the section between them has a slated roof. The east front is irregular, featuring two projecting gabled wings of differing sizes, featuring sinuous bargeboards, pendants, and a casement window with toplights on the upper floor in each. In Walton Lodge, this takes the form of a canted oriel with moulded corbelling. The ground floor has small square-headed windows, and a projecting gabled tiled porch with a moulded, segmental-headed stucco doorway. The front door is a four-panel flush design with leaded panes, with a rectangular fanlight containing a fan design. A wind vane is situated on the south gable. A tall red brick wall with tiled offsets and a moulded string course extends to the south for 14 metres. The south front (Home Lodge) has two unequal gabled wings, with the upper floor apparently added later. Bay windows are present on the ground floor, and cambered, gauged red arches feature above the upper floor windows. The western gable is higher and half-hipped. The houses form part of a picturesque group.
