Description

Thatches is a small house located in Great Amwell village, dating from the 19th century. It is constructed with a timber frame and weatherboarding, topped with a gabled thatched roof. This charming single-storey T-shaped house faces west and features an open thatched verandah on the south side supported by rough-hewn beams. On the west side, there is a canted bay window with a moulded wooden frame, and the thatch extends over it. A tall reticulated terracotta chimney pot adds to its picturesque appearance. The house is considered a cottage ornee. There is a modern linked extension at the rear on the east side, which is not of special interest. Thatches forms a group with Glebe House, the former Vicarage.
