Description
House. Likely dating back to the 17th century, it was remodelled in the early 19th century, probably around 1811, by W.C. Mylne as his own residence. Later alterations were undertaken in 1891 by Robert Mylne, as evidenced by the date and initials on a plastered chimney. The oldest part of the house was probably timber-framed and subsequently cased in red brick; newer sections are built of buff brick. The roof is covered in old red tiles, with sinuous 19th-century bargeboards to the gables on all sides.
It is a two-storey L-shaped house facing west. The front has a gabled wing on the right constructed of old red brick, featuring a sinuous bargeboard and a tilehung apex to the gable, above a three-light window set over a square tiled bay window. A buff brick wing extends to the left, displaying a three-light window on each floor; the lower window is topped with a segmental red brick arch. An internal gable chimney boasts decorative terra-cotta pots. A projecting gable on the north side of the rear wing bears the Mylne crest on an oval plaque, similar to that found at The Flint House.
Originally the farmhouse of Thorpe's Farm, it appears in numerous 18th-century topographical drawings of Great Amwell. The property is a picturesque example of a Cottage Ornée, closely linked to the Mylne family and situated within the landscaped setting off Amwell Road.
