Description

The gatepiers, screen walls, gate, and gateway at Amwell Grove are mid-19th century structures, likely designed by William Chadwell Mylne for the Mylne family property. The tall gatepiers are made of yellow brick and feature moulded stone necking and bold stucco cornices on top. The walls are constructed from uncoursed knapped flints, capped with corbelled and chamfered yellow brick. The gateway, located downhill to the right, is framed by short sections of flint walling that have a chamfered yellow brick plinth, brick quoins, and similar capping, including a flat band and a toothed course below the corbel course. The gateway itself has a depressed round arch made of gauged brick with a keystone, an impost band that projects, and a chamfered plinth. The square-headed wooden gate has an open upper part, and above it is a cast iron openwork scrolled panel featuring the Mylne arms.
