Description

The monument to the New River, located on a smaller island below the church in Great Amwell, was constructed in 1818. It features a square stone pedestal set on a chamfered base, topped with a ball finial. The upstream face of the monument is inscribed with a poem attributed to Archdeacon Nares, which reflects on the importance of the river and the gratitude owed to its source. This neo-classical monument is part of a group situated in a beautifully landscaped setting.
