Description

The monument to the memory of Sir Hugh Mydelton is located on a larger island below the church in Great Amwell village. It features a monumental pedestal and a swagged urn made of Coade stone, which is dated 1800 and was created by Robert Mylne. The monument has inscriptions in English and Latin on its four faces. The south face honors Sir Hugh Mydelton, Baronet, stating, "Sacred to the memory of Sir Hugh Mydelton, Baronet, whose successful care, assisted by the patronage of his King, conveyed this stream to London. An immortal work: since men cannot more nearly imitate the Deity, than in bestowing Health." The north face contains the same dedication in Latin. The west face describes the aqueduct's journey, stating, "From the spring of Chadwell, two miles west; and from this source of Amwell, the aqueduct meanders for the space of XL miles: conveying health, pleasure, and convenience, to the metropolis of Great Britain." The east face is a tribute from Robert Mylne, noting, "This humble tribute to the genius, talents, and elevation of mind, which conceived and executed this important aqueduct, is dedicated by Robert Mylne, Architect Engineer, etc. A C MDCCC." This monument commemorates Sir Hugh Mydelton, who constructed The New River between 1609 and 1613, and was designed by Robert Mylne, who served as Surveyor to the company from 1771 to 1811. It is part of a group situated in a beautifully landscaped setting.
