Description
Amwell Grove is a house built between 1795 and 1797 by Robert Mylne for himself. It was heightened and extended in the early 19th century, with further alterations to the rear part around 1900. The building is constructed of yellow brick with stucco bands at the sill level on the first and second floors, and it features hipped tiled roofs.
This tall house has three stories and a basement, with two-story wings that are set back, facing north. The symmetrical north front has three windows, which are recessed sash windows with six-over-six panes. The central entrance features a four-panel half-glazed door beneath a projecting porch supported by two Composite columns, accessed by steps.
Originally, the house was two stories above the basement with single-story wings set back. An upper stucco band with billet moulding once marked a parapet that rose to single-flue chimneys at each corner for the bedrooms. This distinctive feature has been obscured by the 19th-century heightening of the main block and wings.
The house has been enlarged with the addition of a two-story canted bay on the east side, a rear extension over part of the service yard, and internal reorganization. The original small conservatory has been replaced in the early 21st century by a two-story range featuring a Greek Doric portico in antis.
