Description
The Well House is a house located in Great Amwell village, dating from the early 18th century, with alterations made in the early 19th century. It features stucco on brick with slate roofs and is designed in an L-shape with a double-pile layout, standing two stories tall and facing east. At the northwest, there is a one-story rear outbuilding that connects to a two-story stable made of brick and tile along the road. The house has parallel roofs over each arm of the two-story section.
The front of the house is symmetrical with three windows, a parapet, and two two-story bays flanking the entrance, which has a single sash window above it with eight-over-eight panes. A modern classical porch has replaced a gabled Victorian one. The house also features elegant canted bay windows that project slightly, with a parapet surrounding them above a deep band. The ground floor has sash windows with margin lights, while the upper floor has two-over-two pane sash windows. A gable chimney with offsets is located at the north end. Inside, there is an Art Nouveau fireplace on the first floor.
The house was used by Robert Mylne before he constructed Amwell Grove between 1795 and 1797 and was originally known as Amwell Cottage. It was later named Springfield in the late 19th century and is part of a group of buildings around Amwell Pool.
