Description
The Valley House is a former farmhouse dating from the 16th to early 17th century. It has a timber framed core, which is mainly covered in early 20th century white brick, and features a pantiled roof. The building is two storeys high with an attic and has a two-cell form. It includes early 20th century windows and a door, and there are remains of a lean-to conservatory attached to the front. A central axial stack is present, and during a survey in June 1985, the house was undergoing renovation, revealing much of the internal frame, with some areas showing closely-spaced studs. The structure consists of three bays, with the stack occupying part of the central bay, which appears to be a later addition or reconstruction. The northern end features an original first floor window with heavy cavetto mullions and remnants of another similar window, although the first floor structure at this end has been renewed. The southern room is a single bay, and the ovolo-moulded floor beam along with a similarly-moulded but damaged first floor window suggest it is of a later date than the rest of the house. Additionally, there is a small 17th century cupboard with a carved door set into the north side of the stack, possibly relocated from another site. The extensive additions made between 1905 and 1912 are not considered to be of special interest.
