Description
Ellingham War Memorial is a First World War memorial with additions for the Second World War, made of Portland stone. It is located in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary, which is a Grade I-listed building, and is prominently positioned near the churchyard entrance, just off the main pathway to the church.
The memorial features a Latin cross-head with a collar beneath, set on a tall, octagonal shaft that rises above a tapering four-sided plinth and a three-stepped octagonal stone base. The plinth and the uppermost step of the base display inscriptions in incised lettering that is painted black.
The main inscription on the east face of the plinth reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND/ IN HONOURED MEMORY/ OF/ THE ELLINGHAM MEN/ WHO DIED ON SERVICE/ DURING THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918." The names of the Fallen are listed on the north and south faces.
On the top step of the base, below the principal inscription, are the dates 1939 – 1945, flanked by the names of those who fell in the Second World War, with three names on each side.
