Description

Low Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from the 16th century, with parts that may have an earlier core. The building is timber framed, with sections that are roughcast-rendered and plastered, topped by a plaintiled roof. It has two storeys, and the gable facing the road features a jettied upper floor, with original brackets partially visible, and an overhanging gable supported by a moulded tie beam on original curved brackets. The house has small two-light casement windows from the 20th century and one small gabled dormer on each side at the north end. To the west, there is a lobby entrance with a 19th-century colorwashed brick gabled porch and a four-panel door, with the upper panels being glazed. Inside, there is an internal stack with a mid-20th-century red brick shaft and a one-storey lean-to on the north gable end. The interior has been modernized, concealing most of the original structure. However, a small ground floor room to the north of the stack retains a fully moulded axial bridging beam and additional moulded beams at each end; the beam at the outside gable end is particularly richly moulded and may be a bridging beam, while the rest of the room has been lost. This end of the house may be older than the rest. The roof has not been examined.
