Description

Moat Farm is a farmhouse that dates from the mid 14th century and was later modified in the 17th century, built in two phases to create a two-cell house. There is a large rear addition from 1985 that runs parallel to the original structure. The building is timber framed and plastered, with the left gable end featuring a 19th-century red brick casing up to the eaves. It has a pantiled roof that is less steeply pitched over the later right cell. The farmhouse is one and a half storeys high and has casement windows without glazing bars, all dating from around 1985. The left cell has two raking dormers, while the right cell has one flat-roofed dormer. There is a central internal stack with a plain axial shaft; the lower part is original, and the upper part is from the 19th century. The entrance door is located at the rear.

Inside, the earliest section includes one and a half bays of a former open hall. The open truss features an arched-braced tie beam, with the central portion removed. This supports plain square or oblong queen-posts that are splayed at the base, along with solid braces to the arcade plates. The collar has been lost, likely along with the rest of the original roof structure. There are stop-splayed scarf joints in the arcade plates and front wall plate. Some 14th-century framing is present in the gable end, but much of it is concealed. An inserted floor has a long axial beam, with the joists hidden. The 17th-century structure consists of two bays with plain first-floor studding and a butt purlin roof. There are back-to-back open fireplaces on the ground floor. The farmhouse is surrounded by a medieval moat.
