Description
Hardley Windpump is a derelict drainage windpump dated 1874 on its eastern side. It is constructed of red brick and features the remains of a timber cap. The tower is battered and stands four storeys tall, with a circular plan. There are window openings with segmental arched heads, although the sashes are missing and only the wooden frames remain. On the north side, there is a segmental headed doorway that has been repaired with 20th-century brick, featuring a ledged and boarded door. One window opening on the ground floor has been blocked. The structure includes cast iron spreader plates at the ends of the floor beams. On the eastern side, there is a brick-lined sluice with a semicircular arched opening at the base of the tower leading to the turbine chamber. The remains of the cap frame are present, but there is no windshaft. Inside, there is a square wooden upright shaft with chamfered corners, along with a cast iron wallower and spur wheel. The internal turbine is located in a circular brick chamber and has a separate gear train.
