Description
Hardley Cross is a boundary cross dating from the 16th century, with several restorations over the years. It is made of limestone and features a square chamfered and moulded base on two risers. The shaft is tapered with a square section and has corner-rolls. At the top, there is a coved capital adorned with shields on each face, which supports a plain restored cross. The base is enclosed by plain 19th-century iron railings. The north face of the shaft bears the inscription "Repaired AD 1834 P. Baines Architect," and below it is a cast plaque commemorating repairs and fencing from 1899. The western face of the shaft is inscribed with "Repaired AD 1820" and "REPARATA TEMPORE THOMAE HICKERING ARMIGERI MAIORIS CIVITATIS NOR.1676." This cross marks the boundary of jurisdiction between Great Yarmouth and the City of Norwich. It is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
