Description
These are gates located at the western end of the grounds of Avington House, 5 meters south of Avington Lodge. The gates date from the 18th century and are set within 19th-century gate piers. They feature wrought iron gates hung between stuccoed brick piers. The central carriage gate is taller and has an over-throw that links two open-work columns. Each side has lower pedestrian gates with an open-work frame above and a post against the pier. The 19th-century rectangular piers have chamfered corners and rusticated ball finials on the coping. Outside the piers, there are 19th-century railings and cast iron piers that resemble lanterns. The gates were relocated to this position when the estate was broken up in 1953.
