Description

This is a carriage drive lantern from the early 19th century, located 200 meters west of Avington House in the Itchen Valley. It is made of cast iron and features open cast iron work on the plinth, which has four corner columns that splay outwards at the top. These columns support a square base that holds a glass-sided case around the lamp. Rising from the center of the plinth is a barley sugar column, which was later adapted to contain a gas supply for the lamp.
