Description

The Red Lion Hotel is an early 18th-century building located on College Street. It is two storeys high and features four windows. The roof is tiled with a moderate pitch, hipped on the right side, and has a wide central gable that contains a blocked round opening above a slightly projecting two-bay section. The building has brick dentil cornices and plastered walls with a band at the first floor. The windows are widely spaced, with the first-floor windows being sashes that have glazing bars in moulded frames. The right ground floor window is a recessed sash with glazing bars. There are two inner ground floor windows that are round bays with classical detailing. Between these is a modern door set in a Doric porch with fluted columns and a moulded and modillioned cornice. An extra door has been inserted on the left side, featuring a porch that mimics the central one, along with a modern casement window beside it.

To the left of the original building is an early 19th-century addition that is also two storeys high and has three windows, topped with a low-pitched hipped slate roof. The first-floor window details are similar to those of the original building, including a central oriel bay. The ground floor features early 19th-century sashes with delicate glazing bars.

There is a five-window return to Heath Road and an additional annexe dating from the late 17th century, which is lower and has three windows, along with a recess holding a Sun Assurance plaque on the first floor and four windows on the ground floor. This section has a tiled roof with a moderate pitch, hipped on the left side, and a moulded wood eaves cornice, with a plastered front. The first floor has modern casements, while the ground floor has horizontal sliding sashes. The Red Lion Hotel forms a group with Nos 34 and 36 High Street.
