Description
The building at 22 High Street is an 18th-century structure with a brick front, originally dating to the late 16th or early 17th century. It is two storeys high with three windows, featuring a dentil cornice and a restored parapet above a high-pitched, tiled roof that extends in a U-shape to the rear. The first-floor central window has been blocked and plastered over, while the other windows are recessed sash windows with glazing bars, all set beneath stuccoed lintels. Later, canted bay windows were added to the ground floor. A central six-panel door, with a patterned fanlight in a panelled reveal, is framed by a reeded architrave and a later cornice hood supported by curved brackets. The rear elevation features a doorcase with a reeded architrave and lion masks. A one-window extension to the east, over a carriageway, indicates the original building's end, with a tile-hung first floor that is jettied out, although the supporting brackets are modern. The building is part of a group that includes numbers 12, 16 to 28 (even), and 28A.
