Description

Cheriton House is a small country house dating from the late 18th century, which incorporates an earlier 18th-century building and features 19th-century enlargements. It is constructed of blue header brickwork with red brick dressings and has an old plain tile roof. The house has a 5-bay by 2-bay late 18th-century block that is added at right angles to the end of a 3-bay farmhouse from the 18th century. This block has been extended at the other end with 2 similar bays in the 19th century and enlarged to the rear.

The front of the house is two storeys high, with five bays and two additional bays that are slightly set back to the left, along with a 19th-century conservatory to the right. The central bay of the original block slightly projects and features brick pilasters on each corner that support a timber cornice, which is broken and carried up in the form of a small open pediment. There is an early 19th-century rendered Doric porch that leads to a 19th-century six-panel door, which is half-glazed and has a plain rectangular fanlight above it.

The house has four tall 12-pane sash windows on the ground floor and a first-floor string course, with four additional 12-pane sashes and a central 18th-century round-headed 15-pane sash. All windows are topped with rubbed brick arches. The two 19th-century bays are similar but feature tall 18-pane sashes on the ground floor. The hipped roof has a moulded cornice and 19th-century stacks positioned behind the ridge. Inside the late 18th-century block, there are contemporary features such as chimneypieces, dados, and cornices, although the staircase is from the 19th century.
