Description

The Cheriton War Memorial is made of limestone and is situated in the center of the village of Cheriton on the village green. It features a hooded wheel-head cross atop a square tapering shaft, all resting on a plinth that has a raised tablet inscribed with the years 1914-1919, the words "FOR ENGLAND," names of the fallen, and "FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH."

Two other sides of the memorial display the dates 1914 and 1919 in raised carving. Another side features two engraved stones with lines from the hymn "O Valiant Hearts," which honors those who died in the First World War. The inscription reads: "O VALIANT HEARTS WHO TO YOUR GLORY CAME / THROUGH DUST OF CONFLICT AND THROUGH BATTLE-FLAME; / TRANQUIL YOU LIE, YOUR KNIGHTLY VIRTUE PROVED. / YOUR MEMORY HALLOWED IN THE LAND YOU LOVED. / SPLENDID YOU PASSED, THE GREAT SURRENDER MADE, / INTO THE LIGHT THAT NEVERMORE SHALL FADE. / DEEP YOUR CONTENTMENT IN THAT BLEST ABODE. / WHO WAIT THE LAST CLEAR TRUMPET-CALL OF GOD."

Beneath this, there is a second plaque that reads 1939-1945, "FOR ENGLAND," names of the fallen, and "FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH."
