Description
The milestone, dating from around 1750, is located 210 meters north-west of Torgate Farm. It is a triangular sectioned block made of ashlar sandstone with a shaped head. The inscriptions on the stone are becoming difficult to read due to weathering and likely deliberate erasure, but the east face still shows "To Macclesfield 5 miles" and the west face reads "To London 165 miles." This milestone is part of a group along the old Macclesfield-Buxton turnpike established in 1750, with two other similar stones found in Macclesfield Forest. The inscriptions were likely erased when a new turnpike was constructed in 1821.
