Description
This milestone, dating from around 1750, is located 140 meters north of a milespost on the north side of Buxton Road in Macclesfield Forest. It is a triangular sectioned block made of ashlar sandstone with a shaped top. The north-west face of the stone indicates a distance of 6 miles to Macclesfield, while the south face shows a distance of 164 miles to London. This milestone stands next to a preserved section of the original turnpike, which is now isolated due to the new turnpike constructed in 1821. The stone remains unerased, likely because it does not reflect the shorter distance of the old road for travelers using the new route.
