Description

The Old Bakehouse is a house that was formerly a bakehouse, dating from the 17th century with additions and alterations made in the 18th century. It is constructed of coursed rubble limestone with gritstone dressings, featuring quoins and both intermediate and end ridge stacks, with the northern stack being made of brick. The building has plain gables and a Welsh slated roof, designed in a 'T' plan with a lobby entrance on the east side.

The east elevation is two storeys high with two bays, showcasing glazing bar casements set in flush stone frames. There is a central 17th-century doorway that has a chamfered lintel and quoins, topped with a dripmould. The door itself is a 20th-century planked door. The south elevation features two 2-light chamfered mullioned windows, one of which is blocked. On the north elevation, there are three 2-light 18th-century mullioned windows, including one for the cellar, with moulded bands that connect the heads of the ground floor openings.

Inside, the house has a massive stone baffle at the entry and a chamfered and stepped beam above the hearth. The Old Bakehouse is adjacent to Winster Hall and has historical ties to it, evidenced by a surviving blocked doorway with a moulded 18th-century surround that connects the wall to the east of the hall forecourt with the adjoining plot.
