Description
The Nurses' Home at the rear of Newholme Hospital is a mid-19th century building that was originally part of the Bakewell Union Workhouse. It has been altered over time and is constructed from coursed limestone with sandstone dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof.
The building is two storeys high and features a symmetrical H-plan layout with a 2:2:2 window arrangement. Notable exterior details include a chamfered plinth, punched quoins, projecting sills, and raised ashlar surrounds for the 20th-century metal casements. The central entrance consists of a four-panel door set in a chamfered ashlar surround, topped with a stone hood supported by shaped brackets.
The front wings of the building have gable slits, shaped kneelers, and ashlar copings, with a gabled stone porch located on the right return. A front gable stack is positioned on the left side. The interior has not been inspected.
