Description

The Community Transport Office at Newholme Hospital is a former porters' house and sewing room, dating from the mid-19th century, which was part of the Bakewell Union Workhouse. The building is constructed from coursed limestone with sandstone dressings and features a graduated slate roof.

The exterior consists of a two-storey house with a single-storey sewing room wing, arranged in an L-shaped plan. It has a chamfered plinth, punched quoins, and mullioned and transomed windows with iron casements that include patterned glazing bars. The roadside front of the house displays a variety of windows: two-light, three-light, and a single-light on the ground floor, with a three-light window above set in a gabled half-dormer. The roof features shaped kneelers and moulded gable copings, along with an ashlar ridge stack that has an offset plinth and cornice.

On the left side of the house, which faces the drive to Newholme Hospital, there are four-light windows on each floor. The entrance to the house is located at the rear. The wing to the right of the house has a blind gable, while the left return features one-light, three-light, and two-light windows, with a gable above the middle window. The right return has similar windows and a catslide roof projection over three 2/2 sash windows, along with an ashlar stack that has an octagonal flue. The interior has not been inspected.
