Description
Newholme Hospital, originally the Bakewell Union Workhouse, now serves as the hospital administration block and various offices. Built around 1841, it features later additions and alterations. The building is constructed from coursed limestone with punched sandstone dressings and has a graduated slate roof.
The exterior showcases a symmetrical two-storey front with a 1:2:1:2:1 bay arrangement, where the single bays project and are gabled. It includes single-storey side wings. The two-storey rear wings return twice to partially enclose yards on either side of the main facade. Designed in the Jacobean style, it has a chamfered plinth and large quoins. The windows are chamfered mullioned, with transoms on the ground floor, and feature rectangular-pane iron casements with small lozenges.
The central entrance consists of a six-panel door within a Tudor-arched surround, topped with a hoodmould that steps over a blank shield, and flanked by transomed sidelights. The first floor has a two-light window with a dripstone, and there is a gable clock. The recessed bays contain three-light and two-light windows. The outer gabled bays feature two-storey canted bay windows with a 1:3:1 light arrangement under ashlar hipped roofs, along with gable slits. To the left of the gable, there is a diamond-pane iron casement with a centre-pivot opener. The front and end gables are adorned with shaped kneelers and quoined upstands to the ashlar gable copings, while ashlar end stacks and two ridge stacks complete the roofline.
The differing single-storey side wings include one on the left with a four-light window and another on the right with a three-light window and doorway, both featuring flat roofs. The rear wings have undergone various additions and alterations, with broad Tudor-arched openings onto the yards infilled by plinth walls to casements. This building is a central feature of an impressive range of workhouse buildings from the period. The interior has not been inspected.
