Description
Burre House is a house built in the late 18th century and early 19th century, constructed from ashlar and deeply-coursed sandstone, topped with a slate roof featuring rolled lead ridges. The exterior presents a nearly symmetrical design with a three-storey, three-bay central section, one-storey, single-bay side wings, and two-storey, single-bay pavilions. To the right, a screen wall connects to a gateway leading to a rear courtyard, while a two-storey, two-bay service wing is located on the far left.
The central section features a plinth and a four-panelled door with a fanlight that has radial glazing bars, all set within a Doric aedicule. Flanking the door are three-storey canted bay windows that include a first-floor band, a first-floor sill band, and 2/2 sashes of diminishing heights. Above the door, there is a 2/2 sash window with a cornice supported by consoles. The eaves cornice and rolled-lead ridges crown the hipped roof, which has corniced ashlar end stacks.
On the left side, the wing has a tripartite sash window beneath a band, with a coped gable topped by vase finials. The altered right side wing features a later rectangular projection with a stone-mullioned tripartite window and 1/1 sashes. The two-storey pavilions are set back and include impost bands above round-arched sashes with glazing bars, topped with pedimented gables and ball finials. A tall screen wall on the right conceals later garages and connects to the gateway leading to the rear yard. The service wing on the far left has 2/2 sashes and a parapet that continues from the adjacent pavilion. The interior has not been inspected.
