Description
The terrace walls with associated steps and gateways located to the east of Holme Hall date from the 17th and 18th centuries. They are constructed from coursed limestone and ashlar sandstone. The south-facing retaining wall is approximately 3.5 meters high and 50 meters long, supporting a paved terrace walk that is accessed through an archway and steps at the rear-right corner of Holme Hall.
The slightly lower back wall of the terrace features a round-arched gateway near the house and another gateway further east, which provides a clear view of the Gazebo. Previously, there was a flight of steps leading to the lawned garden along the same axis. The archway at the west end of the lower wall includes a plinth, moulded imposts, and a rusticated arch, flanked by keyed oeil-de-boeuf openings. Inside, there is a vaulted chamber that leads to three flights of nosed steps with quarter-landings.
The round-arched gateway in the upper terrace wall has a wooden gate that leads to a flight of steps under a slab roof. Beyond this are additional steps and a pair of gate piers topped with pyramidal caps. The feature gateway has wooden gates set within a chamfered quoined opening with a round arch and hoodmould. It also features a round-arched ashlar parapet with a square sundial dated 1806, moulded copings, and pierced 17th-century-style finials. Inside the vaulted chamber, there is a flight of steps that leads to a pair of gate piers approaching the Gazebo.
