Description

The Warneford Hospital Nurses' Home is a building constructed between 1913 and 1914 by N.W. Harrison, with later extensions added in the 20th century. It is built of limestone ashlar and features a slate hipped roof with lead rolled hips and ridge. The central axial ashlar stack has an arch linking two shafts with moulded cornices. The building has a rectangular plan with the entrance located at the center of the southeast front, and there is a later single-storey extension on the north corner.

In terms of style, the Nurses' Home is designed in a Neo-Georgian manner and stands three storeys tall. The central bays of three elevations have deeply overhanging bracketed eaves, while the broad turret-like corners are blind and topped with parapets that have moulded cornices. The southeast front has a three-bay center featuring 12-pane sash windows, with the first floor framed in moulded architraves. The ground floor includes a low round-arched 'Diocletian' doorway with sidelights and a keystone that rises through the first-floor band above, alongside a large stone canted bay window on the left.

The northeast elevation is similar but narrower, with a broader left corner turret that is slightly recessed. The northwest, or rear elevation, resembles the front but has asymmetrical fenestration and lacks a bay window. The southwest side has a 1:3:1 bay arrangement, with the center advanced and featuring a moulded stone cornice beneath the hipped roof; a later fire escape is also present. The later single-storey extension obscures part of the ground storeys of the northwest and northeast elevations. The interior has not been inspected.
