Description

Wye Cottage and Granby Cottage are two houses that have been converted into shops and a restaurant, dating from the early 17th century and probably the 18th century, with some alterations. They are constructed of roughcast and rubble limestone, with some sandstone dressings and quoins, and feature tile and stone slate roofs.

The exterior of Wye Cottage consists of a 2-storey, 2-window range with a roughcast gabled facade facing Water Lane. It has a part-glazed door to the right of a transomed 4-light casement window with leaded lights. Above this, there is a similar window that features diamond-section wooden mullions and a transom, which appears to be from the 17th century. Granby Cottage, made of rubble limestone, has an inserted window to the left of a quoined doorway with a stone lintel and a rock-faced sandstone ridge stack.

At the rear, facing Water Street, there are doorways into both Wye Cottage and Granby Cottage. An angled stone-slated canopy is positioned above the doorway into Granby Cottage. The rear also features scattered fenestration with various 19th and 20th-century wooden casements, including leaded lights.

Inside Wye Cottage, there is a chamfered ashlar side-wall fireplace, a chamfered transverse ceiling beam, and large-section common joists with stopped chamfers. The interior also includes a collared principal-rafter truss with a cranked tie beam and a door-head that has been cut out, along with a spine beam.
