Description
The steps, railings, walls, and gateways at the front of The Royal Bank of Scotland were built in 1838 for the Sheffield and Rotherham Bank. They are made of ashlar sandstone and feature cast-iron railings and gates. The central steps lead up to the bank and are flanked by low gates. Each side has plinth walls with three panels of railings, and there are end piers. On the right side, there is a side gateway and vehicle entrance with a stone wall across the yard. The railings have square standards topped with pomegranate finials, stout bars with moulded bases, and spiked ball finials. The low gates at the center and the taller gates at the vehicle entrance are designed in the same style. The end piers and gate piers have plain, square shafts and cornices with shallow pyramidal caps. A coped wall across the yard to the right rises to the same height as the railings on the matching plinth.
