Description
The Former Royal Bank of Scotland is a bank building dating from 1838, originally constructed for the Sheffield and Rotherham Bank. It is built of ashlar sandstone and features a classical style.
The exterior consists of two storeys and is arranged in a 3x3 bay format, with an attached screen wall to the rear right. The outer bays have chamfered quoins. The central section has a recess with double doors beneath a studded panel set in an eared architrave, topped with a modillioned cornice supported by scrolled consoles. The outer bays contain tall 6/6 sash windows in architraves with pulvinated friezes and cornices. On the first floor, there are 3/6 sash windows in architraves with projecting sills on blocks.
A full entablature features the word 'BANK' in bold raised letters, separated by consoles. The parapet includes groups of recessed panels in each bay. The attached screen wall at the rear right has two segmental archways. The interior has not been inspected.
