Description

Denman House, formerly known as the premises of Byways Cafe, is a building located on Bridge Street in Bakewell. It dates from the early 18th century and has been altered over time. The structure is made of deeply-coursed sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a stone slate roof.

The exterior consists of three storeys and a five-window range, with shop fronts extending in front of the ground floor. There are two rear wings separated by a narrow yard. The shop fronts are positioned around a central doorway that has panelled double doors, acanthus-carved consoles, and a segmental pediment. The main wall of the house displays large quoins and raised-edge architraves for the 6/6 sash windows on the first floor and the 3/6 sash windows on the second floor. A band runs along the second floor, and there is an eaves cornice beneath a corniced ashlar parapet with end dies. The right side features an ashlar end stack with a band and cornice, while a corniced brick stack is located at the rear of the ridge on the left.

Inside, there is an original dog-leg staircase with slender turned balusters, a deep-section handrail, and half-balusters against shared rectangular newels. The entrance lobby and staircase dado up to the first floor are adorned with fielded panelling. A 17th-century panelled door leads to the rear of Choice Hair Salon. Byways Cafe occupies the front rooms on the first floor, which include a six-panel door leading into a room with painted fielded panelling, a dado, and a cornice. There is a 20th-century fireplace flanked by original wooden pilasters featuring triglyphs, along with arcaded-panel window shutters. The adjacent tea room contains a ducks-nest grate set in a bolection-moulded stone surround.
