Description
Treby Cottages is a house that has been converted into a pair of cottages, dating from the early 17th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The building is constructed of roughcast stone rubble and features a concrete plain tile roof with gable ends. There are gable end stacks, one with a moulded granite cap at the lower right-hand end and a tapered top at the higher left-hand end. Originally, the layout consisted of three rooms and a through passage, with gable end stacks providing heat to the inner room and the lower end room. There is a truncated rear lateral stack that heated the hall.
The front of the inner room has a second door that was inserted later. Solid walls separate the hall from the inner room and the passage on either side. There are blocked winder stairs beside the lower end stack at the front. The building has two storeys and a four-window range, featuring 20th-century two and three-light casements. A row of small square 20th-century windows is located in the centre of the ground floor, replacing the original hall window. The passage doorway is positioned to the right of centre and has a plank door. There is a second doorway to the left of centre, which is sheltered by an open-fronted roughcast stone porch with a large slate roof. A later lean-to has been added at the left-hand higher end, which also has a plank door at the front.
Inside, there is a large kitchen fireplace at the lower end of Cottage 1, featuring monolithic granite jambs and a chamfered granite lintel. The lower treads of the blocked winder stairs to the right are exposed. The hall and lower end room have replaced ceiling beams. The inner room of Cottage 2 has thin, roughly chamfered, and closely spaced cross beams, with a framed staircase inserted into the rear of the room. The inner room fireplace has been blocked and fitted with a later grate. The hall fireplace is also blocked, and a 20th-century partition has been inserted in the hall, dividing it between the two cottages. The first floor and roof have not been inspected.
